I am soo sorry for not posting last week, so apologies to the dudes who view my posts weekly. Anyhoo, last week I went on a ferry to Spain with my bike and then two days later I came back to Portugal. I did basically nothing in Spain, so I obviously did something interesting in Portugal. I went to Sagres, or, the ‘edge of the world as people would call it up until the 14th century. There is a photo at the bottom so you can see what it looks like.
Until the late middle-ages, the Portuguese called Sagres the end of the world. Then they sailed out into the ocean and came across the Atlantic Islands of Porto Santo (found in 1419), Madeira (found in 1420), and the Azores (found in 1427), and they quickly colonised. Afterwards they sailed down south and landed in Cape Bojador, Africa.
Please welcome Barry the news reporter!
“The things this dude said is true. Sagres was known as the edge of the world for 10 centuries, and I wonder why you guys didn’t sail earlier.”
Now now, Barry. Please report interesting things.
“Fine. There was a person called Prince Henry the Navigator (1394 – 1460) who made the Fortaleza de Sagres (the Sagres Fortress) in 1443. It was made to protect the Algarve coast from pirate raids and was bombed by the English in 1587.”
Thanks Barry! You can go now.
“I’m freeeeeee!”
Ugh. Anyways, what Barry said was true and if you are interested in the Sagres history and the Sagres Fortress, here is a link to a video I found on Youtube. It’s in Portuguese, so please turn on subtitles!
